Spring in Korea – Spring Activities, Spring Weather and More!
Spring in Korea is a time of rejuvenation and excitement. After the cold winter months, spring brings back life – not only to the plants and animals but also to the citizens. The months of March and April make Korea feel like a totally different country after the chillingly cold winters.
The spring season in Korea is most well-known for cherry blossoms (벚꽃 in Korean). However, while cherry blossoms are the most famous spring attraction, there is much more that spring in Korea has to offer. This is arguable the most beautiful season of the year and one that you won’t want to miss.
While blossoms aren’t the only spring attraction in Korea, they are the most common. While most people think of cherry blossoms, other flowers such as azaleas, tulips and canola flowers are all prominent during spring in Korea.
Another overlooked benefit of spring in Korea is the mild temperatures. Where summer is often scorchingly hot, and winter can be absolutely freezing, spring and autumn are quite mild. This makes spring a fantastic time of the year to get out and make the most of Korea’s outdoor activities.
With that being said, this post will cover everything that you need to know about spring in Korea. I will first introduce the weather that you can expect, followed by the best clothing for the season. From there, we will jump into the fun part – the best spring activities!

When Is Spring in Korea?
Korea is a country situated in the northern hemisphere. As such, spring in Korea begins in March and ends at the end of May. Technically, spring is from March 1st to the last day of May. While Spring runs from March to May, there are vast differences between these months. I will discuss these in more detail in the spring weather section.
Needless to say, if you prefer warmer weather, then consider visiting in April or May. These months are a few degrees warmer and will make it more comfortable to spend time outside. March can still be quite chilly – especially later at night.
Spring Weather in Korea

Spring in Korea begins at the start of March. However, it can still be very chilly at the beginning and the temperature can still drop to 0 degrees celsius (or less) during the night. Throughout the day, temperatures will go up to 10 degrees or so.
While March is technically the beginning of spring, I always feel that it’s not truly spring. Rather, March feels like a bridge between winter and spring – while some plants and trees will begin to blossom, the weather feels much more like winter than spring.
April will gradually heat up, with temperatures reaching over 20 degrees by May. If March still sounds a bit too cold for your liking, then May is probably the month to visit. However, you might miss out on some of the blossoms!
Rain in spring is relatively low, and March is one of the lowest rainfall months in Korea. April and May have more rain, but you can still expect only a few days of rain each month. In general, spring is quite dry.
Spring is, however, the worst season for fine dust. Air pollution is usually at its worth during these dry months and spring is even worse in this respect than winter. Most of the year’s most polluted days will occur in March, and April and May usually also have a few bad days.
If you are coming from a country where fine dust isn’t a major concern, you may not consider this as a serious health concern. In fact, many tourists don’t even consider fine dust at all.
However, it is a very serious factor and something that you need to consider. Make sure to read up on fine dust in Korea and to purchase a good fine dust mask before coming.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?
The best time to visit Korea during spring varies from person to person. But, it tends to depend on two main factors:
- Are the cherry blossoms (and other blossoms) something that you want to see?
- Do you prefer colder (around 10 degrees) or warmer (around 20 degrees) weather?
If the former is important for you, then consider visiting at the end of March or the beginning of April. These are the times when the cherry blossoms usually bloom and they are the most beautiful weeks of spring.
While the exact dates vary every year, you can generally expect to see the best blossoms at this time. Usually, the blossoms will last less than one week, so make sure to plan your trip around the blooming dates if they are a highlight for you.
If the blossoms aren’t something you are interested in, or they are of less importance to you, then consider the temperature. March is closer to winter weather, while May is closer to summer weather.
While any spring month can work, I tend to recommend April and May. The blossoms are out in these months and the pollution is generally less of a factor than in March.
During spring, there are no major holidays that need to be avoided. The two biggest holidays of the year, Chuseok and Seollal, take place in winter and autumn. As such, anytime during spring is a great time to visit South Korea!
Clothes to Wear During Spring in Korea
Since the weather varies by over 10 degrees from March to May, the ideal clothing can also change a bit over the period of Spring.
At the beginning of spring, it is possible to wear lighter clothing as long as you also have an outer layer. This means lighter coats and cardigans are very popular during this season. Jeans, slacks, and other long but not overly warm pants are fantastic during spring in Korea.

Other accessories such as scarves and light gloves are also very common, and you will see many people wearing them.
Towards the end of spring, you will start to see people wearing lighter and lighter clothing. In May, it is possible to get by with one layer, just make sure it’s a warmer single layer!
Open shoes are a bit cold for the beginning of spring. However, by the end of it, they are ideal. It is neither too hot nor too cold!
Finally, make sure to get a decent fine dust mask that will protect you from the harmful air pollutants that spring brings. You can either purchase a reusable mask or single-use masks depending on how long you plan to stay for.
Holidays in Spring
Public holidays in Korea are quite different from those of many other countries in that most stores and locations will remain open. Usually, only offices and government-related jobs will close for the day.
In most cases, attractions and stores will remain open – Palaces, museums, department stores and more will remain open. The biggest difference that tourists will face during these days is that many places will be busier than normal.
March 1st Movement/Independence Day – The first day of spring comes with a public holiday. The 1st of March represents the day that the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed under Japanese colonisation.
April 15th, National Assembly Election Day – This is the day that the national assembly is elected and it is a public holiday for many.
April 30th, Buddha’s Birthday – Buddha’s Birthday is celebrated in Korea with many rituals at temples being held across that country. Lanterns are also hung at many locations and they make for stunning sights! If you want to visit a temple in Korea, then this is a great time to do so!
May 5th, Children’s Day – Children are a very important part of the family in a child-orientated society like Korea. On Children’s Day, you can expect many attractions to be very busy. If you plan to visit an amusement park, zoo, children’s museum, or other such attractions, try to avoid this day. They will be very busy!
Tips for Visiting Korea in Spring

Book in advance! If you plan to attend any of the famous flower festivals, then make sure to book in advance. These tours and travelling to these locations are incredibly popular and if you haven’t booked prior, it’s easy to miss out!
Have some leeway. If you are planning to experience blossoms during spring in Korea, make sure to leave yourself some leeway. The exact dates that trees will blossom can vary, so make sure to leave yourself at least a few days on either side of the expected blossoming dates.
Dress warm! I’m sorry if this sounds obvious, but it’s all too easy to catch a cold in spring. It’s exciting to be able to finally wear your summer outfits again, but make sure to stay warm! Spring colds are the worst!
Have good moisturizer/hand cream. Both winter and spring in Korea are very dry, and your skin will feel it. Very quickly! I personally have had big issues with the dry air – if left untouched, it will crack and peel your skin. To counteract this, make sure to have a good moisturizer as well as some hand cream and strong lip balm. You will thank me later!
Watch out for allergies and asthma. As in every country, hay fever makes a strong comeback in the spring months. However, in Korea, it is often worse because it is combined with fine dust and other air pollutants. If you have asthma, make sure to bring your inhalers. The same goes for if you have allergies – make sure to come prepared.
I know I have already mentioned it a few times, but also consider purchasing a dust mask. It will make life with allergies/asthma much easier.
Best Spring Activities in Korea
These are some of the best events and activities that you can (and should!) do during spring in South Korea.
Not all of these activities are unique to spring alone, but they all offer something unique in spring. For example, while many great outdoor activities can be experienced in summer and autumn as well, the weather during spring makes them even better!
Food Festivals

Spring in Korea is not only a time of cherry blossoms but also of some fantastic food! If you love seafood and fruit then you are in luck!
Strawberry festivals
These are a big one once the warmer weather starts hitting Korea and there are many different strawberry fields around the country that can be visited and enjoyed once spring begins.
Since strawberry picking is not an all-day activity, you will find that a lot of different tours include strawberry picking in their itinerary. Tours to Nami Island, Vivaldi Park, Garden of the Morning Calm and more all have strawberry picking tours available.
If you really want to make the most of the strawberry season, then you can even pick your own strawberries to make jam. This is a great way to welcome in the new season!

Snow Crab Festival
There are two crab festivals in Korea – Uljin & Yeongdeok. These festivals both occur in early spring and are quite similar crab-centric events. If you love crab, then these two festivals will allow you to taste some of the best quality crabs around!
While both of the events differ a bit in performances and shows, they are all related to crabs. Cooking, fishing and eating competitions can be found at both and you can also see the Snow Crab auction at Yeongdeok.
However, both of these locations are found quite far outside of Seoul. As such, make sure that you book travel early (due to the popularity of the events) and that you have accommodation if needed.
If you love seafood in general, or if you’re particularly fond of crab (like me!), then one of these festivals is a must-visit during spring in Korea.

Cherry Blossom Festivals
Cherry blossoms in bloom!
Let’s be real – the biggest attraction during spring in Korea is the stunning flora that’s coming to life. While cherry blossoms aren’t unique to Korea, they are well worth seeing. Regardless of whether you’ve seen them before or not, these flowers are breathtaking!
Before I begin this section, a word of warning about cherry blossom festivals. These festivals sell out very fast and many months in advance. If you are looking to visit one of the festivals below, make sure to book as early as you possibly can.
If you plan to stay nearby one of the festivals, book your accommodation as early as you possibly can. Prices will skyrocket as spring approaches – if they don’t completely sell out!
Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival
This is one of the most famous cherry blossom festivals in South Korea and for good reason – it is stunning.
Jinhae is located four hours to the south of the capital and that makes this an event that is often better done over a few days (rather than as a day trip). Unfortunately, you will have to book many months in advance if you want to stay nearby.
Due to the crazy popularity of the season, you will need to book accommodation and transport at least 6 months in advance. Any later and the prices will skyrocket if you’re lucky. If you’re unlucky, tickets will totally sell out.
While I believe that Jinhae is the most beautiful cherry blossom festival in Korea, don’t worry if you miss out. There are many alternatives!

Gyeongju Cherry Blossom Festival
Situated around Bomun Lake in Gyeongju, this festival provides a beautiful lakeside walk – one of the most beautiful that I can think of.
What makes the Gyeongju Cherry Blossom Festival unique is that there are also a lot of historically important buildings which can be explored between enjoying the blossoms. Since Gyeongju was once the capital of the Silla Dynasty, there is a lot here to learn and see!
The cherry blossoms at Gyeongju are stunning sights, however, don’t expect them to be as stunning as those at Jinhae. If seeing cherry blossoms is your only goal, Jinhae is probably best. However, Gyeongju is a great way to learn a bit of Korean history while you explore the festival.
On top of this, taking a boat out on the lake gives you a unique perspective of the trees!

Hwagae Cherry Blossom Festival
This is another one of the most popular cherry blossom festivals in the country and a festival that you will hear a lot about once you begin looking into them.
The festival itself is oddly located as it is simply a road in the middle of an otherwise unassuming area. However, this is part of what makes it so unique – it’s a beautiful road located out of the way.
The festival is again located about 4 hours outside of Seoul and follows a road that winds through the nearby landscape. The road loop is around 4km long and is flanked by thousands of cherry blossom trees.
Again, while maybe not as visually breathtaking as Jinhae, this festival has its own attractions and is a one of a kind experience. It’s also a great way to get some exercise while taking in the sights of the amazing trees!

Jecheon Cheongpung Cherry Blossom Festival
This festival is another one that is located a few hours outside of Seoul and makes for a stunning location to view the cherry blossoms.
Generally less crowded than the aforementioned festivals, the Jacheon Cheongpung Festival follows some roads through the land similar to those of Hwagae. The roads are flanked by thousands of cherry blossom trees that make for fantastic photos.
Due to its closer proximity to Seoul, this festival is a great choice. Not only is it located closer, but it is also one of the less crowded festivals.
This is one of the festivals that I often recommend for the reasons above. I also like that the festival makes for more unique photos due to being a bit less popular than the others.

Seokchon Lake Cherry Blossom Festival
If you’re in Seoul and don’t have time to leave the city, never fear. There are some fantastic spots to view the stunning flowers and take some memorable photos. The best of these locations is Seokchon Lake.
Seokchon Lake is located right underneath Lotte Tower. In fact, Lotte World theme park is partially built on this lake! While Lotte World may be the top attraction for much of the year, spring surrounds the lake almost entirely with cherry blossoms.
The lake doesn’t have any entry fee and no tickets are required. As such, it’s extremely convenient and easy to visit. However, this does mean that it can be busy… Very very busy! I last visited in spring 2021, and even with the ongoing pandemic, this spot was incredibly busy.
With that being said, it’s easy to see why. The cherry blossoms at Seokchon Lake are stunning and by far the best in Seoul. If you can’t spare the time to leave the capital, make sure to check out Seokchon Lake during spring in Korea.

Seoul Forest Cherry Blossom Festival
While I believe that Seokchon Lake has the best cherry blossoms in Seoul, Seoul Forest is also stunning during spring. Unlike Seokchon Lake which is just a walking circuit, Seoul Forest is fantastic for picnics and is ideal for visiting with children.
Seoul Forest itself is made up of a range of smaller areas. Each of these areas has a unique appeal and if you have an afternoon spare, I recommend visiting them all. With that being said, cherry blossoms are definitely the biggest attraction during spring in Korea.
Cherry blossom trees line the paths on both sides with various bulbs and plants growing underneath. While not quite as fantastic as Seokchon Lake, Seoul Forest makes for an ideal outing for families. Even better, it’s totally free to visit and there is no need to reserve a visit!

Seoul Vicinity Cherry Blossom Tour
If you want to explore more cherry blossom locations, and prefer to stay closer to Seoul, make sure to check out this tour!
Depending on the weather and time, the tour will visit 3 different cherry blossom locations around the city. Not all of them will be located in Seoul, however, most will be located close to the city.
This tour is ideal if you would prefer to visit a few different locations within the day rather than just visiting a single location and spending longer there.
It is hard to talk about the specifics of this tour as the three locations change per tour. However, you can rest assured knowing that you are going to be able to see some beautiful cherry blossoms.

Other Spring Blossoms
While cherry blossoms are the main attraction during spring in Korea, there are so many other flowers that blossom at this time.
If you are looking for a way to experience spring but also to avoid the crowds, many of these festivals are ideal. While they are still popular, they have nowhere near the crowds that the cherry blossom festivals will have.
Honestly – this might be a controversial take – I think that many of these flowers are more beautiful than cherry blossoms. While I absolutely love cherry blossoms, these flowers just have so much more colour and vibrance! If you’re experiencing spring in Korea, make sure to check them out!
Goryeosan Mountain Azalea Festival
If you are looking to enjoy the spring flowers, but you aren’t interested in cherry blossoms, then this is the ideal event.
The Azaleas that come out during April on Goryeosan are truly breathtaking and it is one of the most beautiful locations in Korea during this season. I would go as far as to say that the azaleas are actually more stunning than the cherry blossoms!
As with most festivals during this season, the biggest downside is crowding. This is especially true for this festival as there are paths which must be kept to. However, I still highly recommend this festival if you get the chance!
Goryeosan is located about two hours outside of Seoul.

Gwangyang Maehwa & Gurye Sansuyu Festival
Famous for its plum blossoms (maewha) and Cornus fruit (sansuyu), this is another stunning spring festival.
Located about 5 hours from Seoul and around 3 hours from Busan, Gwangyang is a great place to visit and experience Korea spring flora.
The plum blossoms cover the hills and in many ways, they look a lot like cherry blossoms. I’ve definitely got them confused before! However, the sansuyu also adds a touch of colour to this spring tour, with the yellow blossoms adding a vivid touch to the landscape.
Both of the blossoms are located in different areas that the tour will take you to. If you are looking to add a splash of colour (other than pink!) to your spring trip, consider the Gwangyang and Gurye tour!

Jirisan Mountain Royal Azalea Festival
Similar in looks and colour to the Goryeosan Mountain Azalea Festival, the Jirisan Mountain Festival is a more freeing tour.
While I have found the flowers here to be less breathtaking than at Goryeosan, the areas that can be explored are also larger and allow for a bit more freedom. On top of that, the tours stay at the mountain for longer also giving you more time to look around the mountain.
At Jirisan, you can either choose to view the flowers in the herb valley or hike to the top and see them from the summit. If you are able to, it’s definitely worth visiting the summit!

Taean Tulip Festival
This festival occurs from March to April and is perhaps the most colourful spring festival in South Korea.
Taean is located a little under 3 hours away from Seoul and is one of the closer festivals on this list (as many are located 4 hours away from the capital).
The festival is famous for its stunningly bright and colourful tulips which come in nearly every colour imaginable. This is one of the five World Tulip Summit festivals and as such is a world-class festival.
What makes the festival so exciting, however, are the other performances which are included. Often singers will make an appearance and fireworks displays can also be seen!

Goyang International Flower Festival
Goyang International Flower Festival is another very colourful event if you want to add a bit more colour than the cherry blossoms offer. This festival is also located in Goyang – a satellite city of Seoul. This means that it is very close!
Located just outside of Seoul, the Goyang Flower Festival can be found on the banks of one of the biggest artificial lakes in Asia. Although artificial, however, you would be hard-pressed to notice that while you are there.
The park has not only a nice lake but also many walking and biking tracks and it is the most family-friendly festival on this list due to these facts. playgrounds and other attractions can also be found.
The flower festival here has a large variety of flowers and that park is very pleasant to explore!

Yuchae Canola Flower Festival
Taking place in Daejeo Eco Park in Busan, the Yuchae Canola Festival is the most overwhelming bring festival during spring in Korea. Although absolutely stunning, I find my mind reeling at just how bright these pictures are! It’s almost unbelievable!
Anyway, it is believable because it’s a real festival! Generally taking place for about four weeks, the festival occurs in April. The festival is very popular and it attracts thousands of people – as such, prepare for it to be quite busy!
With that being said, it’s the most breathtaking canola flower festival in Korea and I highly recommend visiting. Daejeo Eco Park is easily reachable via the Busan Metro and if you’re already in Busan, this festival is worth checking out!

Guri Hangang Canola Flower Festival
Guri Hangang Canola Flower Festival is the final park on this list and the closest to Seoul. Well, it really is in Seoul!
Located just 30 minutes from Seoul, Guri-si is another of Seoul’s satellite cities and as such, it is very easy to reach. Either with Seoul’s fantastic public transportation or otherwise!
Canola flowers are a stunning yellow and when thousands of them are planted together, the colours are very awe-inspiring. I didn’t know how beautiful canola flowers could be until seeing pictures of this festival!

Spring Day Trips
If you’re looking to escape the cities, but don’t have enough time to leave them for long, make sure to check out these day trips. These particular day trips are especially worth visiting during spring in Korea as they are at their most colourful.
Nami Island
Nami Island is one of the most popular tours from the capital due to its closeness and seasonal foliage.
However, due to this, it can also be quite busy. Personally, I found Nami Island to be a bit too crowded and overwhelming when I visited in summer. This is due to the season and time though, and it is possible to visit in less crowded times.
Nami Island is located a bit over an hour to the east of Seoul. It is located in the middle of a large lake and is well-known for its famous tree path which changes seasonally. It is a stunning photo location and if you can get a photo without the crowds it is fantastic.
Since Nami Island is close to Seoul and in itself requires less than a day, the tour is normally combined with some other locations also.

Pyunggang Botanical Park
Pyunggang Botanical Park is located a few hours outside of Seoul. The garden currently exhibits thousands of different plants that are both native and international. If you want to enjoy flowers and plants from all over the world, this is the best park to visit during spring in Korea.
The botanical park is divided into 12 themed areas that each represent a different climate. You can find everything from a rock garden based on Asian alpine species to wetlands that mimic a natural wetland environment.
The Pyunggang Botanical Park is a great place to not only enjoy natural splendour but also to learn. There’s a lot to learn about plants, and the botanical park has a lot to teach. Whether you love plants or just want to take some stunning photos, Pyunggang Botanical Park is a great place to visit during spring in Korea.

Pocheon Art Valley
Pocheon Art Valley provides one of the most unique views in Korea. This old quarry has since been reclaimed by nature, and the valley now provides a stark contrast between the impact of humans and mother earth which has since made it far more beautiful.
Pocheon Art Valley is located a few hours outside of Seoul and it’s a fantastic spot for all visitors to Korea. Whether you are a couple, family, or individual, Pocheon Valley has something for everyone. Of course, it also provides stunning photo opportunities!

Seoraksan Mountain
Seoraksan is the third highest mountain in South Korea, sitting behind only Hallasan and Jirisan. However, despite these mountains being taller, Seoraksan is probably the most famous. Not only is it the closest to Seoul (and hence, visited more), but it’s a beautiful hike.
If you want to reach the mountain peak, expect to dedicate a day to hiking. If you don’t have much time to spare, or would simply prefer a more casual stroll, Seoraksan still has a lot to offer. There are cable cars that provide stunning views as well as many shorter walks
If you only visit one mountain in South Korea, this is the mountain that I recommend. It’s far more easily accessible from Seoul than either Jirisan or Hallasan and the views are breathtaking. During spring, Seoraksan is at its best.

Spring Parks in Seoul
Seoul has a lot of fantastic places to see cherry blossoms and other spring flowers. If you don’t have time to travel, or would just prefer to stay in the city, then these are the events for you!
Namsan Park
Namsan Park in spring.
Namsan Park is probably the most well-known park in the city due to being located on Namsan and right underneath Namsan Tower. If you haven’t yet seen the view from the tower, I definitely recommend it. However, that’s something for another post!
Something that many people don’t realise, is that Namsan actually has a really nice park and a lot of very well maintained walking trails. While the most popular method of transport is the bus, I recommend walking to the tower if you visit in spring.
The walks are made like roads (minus the smaller paths), meaning that they are very easy and accessible to everyone. What makes them stunning, however, is that in spring, the cherry blossoms will overhang the paths. These cherry blossoms are what make Namsan a must-visit during spring in Korea.
Circling the whole mountain will take about 45 minutes to one hour. If you want to walk to Namsan Tower, expect to walk for around 30-45 minutes. A bit longer if you stop to take in the views!

Naksan Park
Naksan Park in the middle of spring!
Naksan Park is another famous mountain in Seoul that really comes to life in spring. Naksan has a larger flower variety than Namsan and you can expect to find a lot more than just cherry blossoms. However, there are still enough cherry blossoms to give you a feeling of how beautiful they are!
Naksan is located between Hyehwa and Dongdaemun stations and it is only a short 30-minute walk to the top. While the walk is quite steep, it follows a road and buses also provide transport to the top.
If you want to get the most of the spring flowers then I recommend walking from Hyehwa to the top. This will take you through some stunning gardens before eventually reaching the blossoms near the top!

Seongbukcheon
Seongbukcheon is a stream that flows through Seongbuk-gu in northern Seoul. Seongbukcheon eventually flows into Cheonggyecheon, a much more famous stream.
While Seongbukcheon is very often overlooked, there are a few locations along the stream which really come out in spring – especially near Hanseong University (located on Line 4).
Between Hanseong University and Sungshin Women’s University, you can find the stream surrounded by cherry blossoms. It’s easily one of the most beautiful places to view the blossoms in Seoul!
Since the stream is not a common tourist attraction you will find that it’s not very busy. Usually, the only people visiting will be locals who live nearby.

Konkuk University
Konkuk University is a university that is famous for having a breathtaking campus deep inside the city.
Konkuk University (often shortened to Kondae) is located on the green line (Line 2) on the eastern side of the city loop. The university is located close to the station that is named after it.
What makes the blossoms at Kondae even more stunning is that they have the backdrop of a large lake that is located right in the middle of the campus. The university is built around this lake and it is due to this that the university is considered very pretty within Korea.
The path around the lake takes about 30 minutes to complete, however, it can take longer if you stop to enjoy the blossoms.
If you want to experience the blossoms within Seoul, this is one of the best places to do so.

Seoul Forest
In spring the poppies come out!
Seoul Forest is another fantastic spot in Seoul to experience the spring blossoms. To my knowledge, there are no cherry blossoms in the park, but there are many other blossoms and trees that are stunning in this season.
In later spring the poppy fields at Seoul Forest will begin to bloom spreading colour throughout the park. If you explore the park then you are bound to find many more blossoms and areas that ‘come alive’ in the spring.
Seoul Forest is also one of the best places in the city to enjoy a picnic! If you are looking to make the most of the weather then consider bringing some food and enjoying the lakeside area – it’s definitely one of the best spots in Seoul.

Yeouido & Ttukseom
The final locations on this list are located on the banks of the Han River in Seoul. Both Ttukseom and Yeouido have fantastic Han River parks and both are worth visiting if you get the chance.
However, Yeouido is often very busy. Especially when the weather is nice! For this reason, Ttukseom can quite often be the better place to visit.
Both of these parks are ideal for picnics as you get stunning views of the city across the Han River. You can also make the most of the new-found warmer weather!
Yeouido also has its own (smaller) cherry blossom festival and if you haven’t yet experienced the cherry blossoms, then this festival is a good way to experience them without having to travel far.

Gyeongbokgung & Changdeokgung
The palaces are a great place to visit in spring!
Gyeongbokgung & Changdeokgung palaces are two fantastic palaces within central Seoul that are ideal to visit in spring. While they can be visited in any season, they are best in spring – especially Changdeokgung.
Although Gyeongbokgun is the most visited palace in Seoul, I generally recommend Changdeokgun as it is a bit less busy and it also has a royal garden. This garden is a lot of fun to explore and it is stunning with the spring blossoms.
Gyeongbokgun also begins to bloom and the garden area around the back of the palace really comes to life. Even if you have already visited the palace, I recommend doing so again in spring!
If you hire hanbok (Korean traditional clothing) then the entrance fee can also be avoided! If you’re looking for the most stunning photos during spring in Korea, you can’t beat hanbok with cherry blossoms!

Seoul Grand Park
Seoul Grand Park is a park located to the south of Seoul on Line 4 (light blue line) and is much more than just a park. Inside the greater park, a theme park, Seoulland, and a large zoo can also be found. It’s fantastic for visiting as a family.
Seoulland and the zoo are attractions in themselves, but the park is also very nice. Situated around a lake, the park surrounds the water.
If you don’t feel like walking, there are transport options available. A small ‘train’ (a truck pulling carriages) can take you around the lake loop. Alternatively, you can take the cable car from one side of the lake to the other.
In spring especially, this is a great way to see the foliage and flowers from above.

Mountains in Spring
While hiking is generally considered a summer or winter activity, I believe that hiking is at its best in spring! Why? While nature is just splendid during this season. While winter and summer both have their unique attractions, spring has fantastic sights and weather to boot!
Seoraksan
Seoraksan is stunning – even more so in spring. This image was taken in winter.
One of the most popular mountains to climb is Seoraksan. This mountain is located in the north of Korea and can be reached within a couple of hours driving from the capital.
Seoraksan is one of the tallest mountains in South Korea and it is also one of the most well-maintained. Nearly all of the paths are in great condition and restaurants and cafes can be found on the mountain.
There are many different paths on Seoraksan ranging in length and difficulty. If you are just visiting for a morning or afternoon there are some stunning areas to visit and even a cable car which can be used.
I have yet to visit Seoraksan in spring, but I have seen stunning pictures and it is definitely on my to-do list for the upcoming spring!

Bukhansan
Bukhansan is the best mountain to explore if you want a more serious hike but want to stay close to Seoul. Bukhansan is located within Seoul and can be reached via a short subway ride followed by a bus.
Bukhansan is another large mountain and there is a very large variety of paths that you can choose to take. These range greatly in length and difficulty and you can find anything from a short stroll to a day-long hike.
If you are interested in learning about Korean history and culture then there are a lot of Buddhist structures on the mountain which you can visit. Bukhansan isn’t only a good way to exercise, but it is also a good way to learn about Korea.

Daedunsan
Last, but by no means least, is Daedunsan. This mountain is located quite far to the south of Korea but can be reached within a day trip. While this mountain is famous for its fall foliage, it is also a breathtaking sight in any season -, especially spring.
The drive to the mountain takes about 3 hours, and as such, it can be completed in a slightly rushed day trip. Alternatively, you can find accommodation nearby and stay, giving you more free time in the area.
As with many mountains in Korea, Daedunsan also has a cable car which takes you from the car park to around halfway up the mountain. If you would prefer not to hike, you can get some food and take in the view!

Leave the City for the Beaches!
Korea has some amazing beaches!
Some other attractions that are very inviting in the spring are the beaches of Korea. While the country isn’t known for beaches, it really should be! There are some magnificent beaches around the peninsula.
Although beaches are generally summer attractions, I actually prefer them in late spring. Summer in Korea is very hot and it can reach the point at times when it is almost too hot to be outside.
Summer also draws large crowds to the beaches and the more popular beaches will be totally packed in the months of July and August.
The east coast of Korea tends to have the nicest beaches. While there are other great beaches in Korea, I recommend the northeast of Korea. Specifically Sokcho and Yangyang.
These beaches are located very close to each other and can both be enjoyed on the same trip. Although, I think that Hajodae is the nicest of them all.
The beaches reach for miles down the coast and it’s easy to find a less crowded spot to enjoy. Although crowds shouldn’t be an issue in the spring months!
Due to the lack of knowledge (at least with tourists) about the beauty of Korean beaches, this is one of the best but underappreciated spring attractions in South Korea.

Spring in South Korea
Spring is one of the most popular times to visit South Korea and for good reason. The peninsula really becomes a different place in the spring months of March to May, and after the cold weather that winter brings, spring is a nice respite.
This list of spring activities in Korea is just scratching the surface of what you can do in spring in Korea. Towards June, T-shirts and shorts can be worn. However, some long-sleeved clothing is also recommended as it can still be a little cold at night.
Further, make sure to bring a fine dust mask or to purchase on in Korea. Fine dust can be a big problem in the earlier months of spring!
